About Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish – Waugh
Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Parish in Waugh began with Ukrainian settlers arriving from Ukraine in 1902 and grew into a lasting parish community about 60 km north of Edmonton. The first church was built in 1904, and the parish was later incorporated on June 1, 1934. A new church building with three domes and a hall underneath was constructed in 1939, while the cemetery next to the church covers one acre.
The parish’s early life was shaped by many founding families, including S. Gil, J. Sereda, S. Cheknita, N. Woyewidka, J. Strilchuk, Komarnycky, Ozhybko, S. Dasyk, Kostiw, S. Lashkiwsky, N. Kuzyk, Panchiy, Kilarsky, F. Bencharsky, Smerechynsky, O. Zilynsky, and Leo Zilynsky. The old church also received visits from Bishop Nykyta Budka and Bishop Vasyl Ladyka, and Basilian Fathers from Edmonton regularly served the community,
