Originating in Chicago in 1986, then located at St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies was fully incorporated into the University of St. Michael’s College, in Toronto, on July 1, 2017. As an autonomous entity within the University’s Faculty of Theology, it is located in Windle House

Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church Patriarch, His Beatitude Sviatoslav Shevchuk, supports the move and was quoted by Stefan Slovak, University of Toronto Director of Communications, Events and Outreach: “It is incredibly significant that the Sheptytsky Institute will now be located at the University of St. Michael’s College, which has a long and distinguished history, and is federated with the University of Toronto, one of the world’s great research universities.”

“The Institute specializes in the theology, spirituality, history, and ecclesial [community] of the Eastern Churches, both Orthodox and Catholic,” notes Stefan Slovak. “It is the only institution in North America working under the auspices of an Eastern Catholic Church that supervises PhD work in Eastern Christian Studies.”
